Assimilation consonnantique

Lorsque dans une composition, soit pas affixation soit par incorporation, deux consonnes se rencontrent il peut se produire des phénomènes d'assimilation.

l'assimilation progressive
La première consonne domine la seconde.

1. L + TL > LL	mīl- + -tlah > mīllah
2. L + Y > LL	pil- + -yōtl > pillōtl
3. Z + Y > ZZ	chōquiz- + yoh > chōquizzoh
4. X + Y > XX	mix- + -yoh > mixxoh
5. CH + Y > CHCH	oquich- + yōtl > oquichchōtl
6. TZ + Y > TZTZ	huitz- + -yoh > huitztzoh
7. CH + HU > CHCH	nech- + huālnōtza > nechchālnōtza
8. TZ + HU > TZTZ	mitz- + huālmomaquilia > mitztzālmomaquilia

L'assimilation régressive.
La seconde consonne domine la première.
1. /nasale/ + /sifflante/ > /sifflante longue/
niquim- + -centlālia > niquizcentlālia
tiquim- + -xox > niquixxox
Il arrive souvent que la transcription ne rende pas la prononciation.

2. CH + TZ > TZTZ

4. CH + X > XX
nēch + xōxa > nēchxōxa également transcrit nēxxōxa

5. Z + X > XX
nacaz + xapotla > nacazxapotla également trancrit nacaxxapotla

6. TZ + X > XX
huilacapitz + xōchitl > huilacapitzxōchitl ou huilacapixxōchitl

7. /w/ + /bilabiale/ > /bilabiale longue/
cuauh + māitl > cuammāitl.
nāuh + pa > nāppa.

8. M + N > NN
om + nāhui > onnāhui

9. M + T > NT

chicōm + tepēc > chicōntepēc

10. M + TL > NTL
cōm + tlah > cōntlah

11. M + CH > NCH
cōm + chīhua > cōnchīhua

12. M + C > NC
tenām + co > tēnanco
N represente le son -ng anglais ou allemand.

13. M + TZ > NTZ
cōm + tzālan > cōntzālan

14. M + CU > NCU
cem + cuemitl > cencuemitl
N represente le son -ng anglais ou allemand.

15. N + M > MM
on + mopiqui > ommopiqui

16. N + P > MP
on + pēhua > ompēhua

17. N + HU > HU
tonān + huān > tonānhuān également transcrit tonāhuān

18. M + HU > NHU sans doute prononcé /hu/ avec une légère nasalisation de la voyelle qui précède.
am + huāllāzqueh > anhuāllāzqueh également transcrit ahuāllāzqueh

19. /nasale/ + Y > Y
tepitōn + yōtl > tepitōnyōtl également transcrit tepitōyōtl
am + yāzqueh > anyāzqueh également transcrit ayāzqueh.
ō+am+yōl-queh > ōayōlqueh. Sah6,90 (oaiolque).
Le 'n' graphique ne devait pas être prononcé ou l'était comme un gn français.
