Fingering of arpeggios Learn to play arpeggios as fast as possible, they always sound impressive as "fillers", and can be used almost anywhere in a song (beginning, middle or end). Arpeggio = playing the notes of a chord consecutively (harp style). A broken chord in which the individual notes are sounded one after the other instead of simultaneously. Reading the tables: R = right, L = left hand, 1 = thumb, etc., 5 = little finger. See Fig. 10 - 12 for the actual keys to play in each scale / chord in the tables below. |

Explanation: The above fingerings are to be extrapolated for the appropriate number of octaves - if a (1) occurs in L (left hand), the student is expected to substitute the 5th finger at the beginning of the excercise, and the R (right hand) requires the use of the 5th finger at the top. Other substitutions are possible which make playing the first note(s) of some exercises (before the regular physical pattern begins) more comfortable - use your imagination! The fingering for cross-hand arpeggios is: L 531 - R 135 - L 531 - R 135 - L 2 - R 531 - L 135 - R 531 - L 135 by Peter Henderson Indiana University |
