Hindu groups in Gurugram/Gurgaon, on the outskirts of New Delhi, have been trying to pressure government officials for weeks to ban Muslims from Friday prayers in the open courtyard. Most recently, police arrested at least 30 protesters yesterday who tried to interrupt prayers. and proclaiming anti-Muslim slogans Critics have blamed the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for its policies to oppress the minorities. including about 200 million Muslims in India. Modi's government insists it has never given up on Hindus. He reiterated that all Indian citizens have equal rights regardless of religion. Gurugram, the capital city of Haryana, has a local executive who is from the BJP party. And this is not the first time a conflict has occurred between different religions in this city. Back in 2018, Hindus in Gurugram also moved in because they didn't want Muslims to pray outdoors. Government officials tried to mediate the dispute. And it has set about 35 outdoor terraces where Muslims can use it for Friday prayers. |
