Oh, it's so hard to imagine a world before dating was massive. Can you actually believe that people basically used to go out with the person who lived up the road? Ugh. Thankfully, we now live in an era where we have choice! Ah, choice. So much choice. Hundreds … upon … hundreds … upon… Well, yeah. That’s the thing, isn’t it? We do have choice these days. But choice can be … well, stressful! Dating, in fact, as a whole, can get a bit overwhelming: like you’re having to choose something from the world’s longest menu, except instead of lunch, it’s the person you’re going to see every day for the next ten years (or more). If you’re feeling a bit burdened by the world of modern romance, don’t worry. We’ve boiled down a few key tips that will (hopefully) make the journey a bit easier. Chill Yep, that’s it. That’s the first tip. Well, it’s worth saying, isn’t it? We can put so much pressure on ourselves to get dating right that sometimes it’s easy to forget that it’s actually supposed to be, well, you know, fun. Dating can be a really exciting, varied and enjoyable way of meeting new people, figuring out stuff about yourself and going for some interesting days and evenings out. Does it have to be much more than that? Sometimes, taking your eye off the ball - worrying less about where it’s all going - can make it that much easier. Keep it simple If you’re doing lots of dating, it can be easy to start to feel like you’re running out of ideas for stuff to do. Bike ride? Done it! Trip to the zoo? Check! Mini golf? Yep! But sometimes it’s better to take the pressure off a little and just do something easy - even if you have done it before. A walk in the park or a cup of tea at a cafe (it’s not lame!) can be just as good as some clever-clever day out - and it might mean you get a chance to actually chat, instead of concentrating on staying under par on hole 15. Be yourself And the prize for most cliched piece of advice goes to… But it’s true! It can be pretty tempting to try and ‘impress’ your date by being something you’re not, but let’s face it - they’re going to figure out who you are eventually anyway (I mean, theoretically, you could try acting cool for the next fifty years of marriage, but it might start to wear a little thin). Sometimes, just letting your personality show (within, you know, limits) is the easiest route - you can figure out if you like them, they can figure out if you like you, and you can get on with the business of actually fancying each other. Be honest It can be hard to figure out the rules when it comes to dating more than one person. Do you need to tell each of them? Would that ruin things? Should you just not worry about it? Let’s not pretend this is all simple - it ain’t. And while it would probably kill the mood to tell someone on a first date that they’re just one of a list of potential boos, it can make things a teeny bit easier to find a way to mention it before things get too far down the line. Think of it like this: if you were starting to get into them and they were doing the same thing, wouldn’t you like to know? It doesn’t have to be online We know! Controversial! But you know that thing about just meeting the person who lives up the street? You’re still allowed to do that. Or alternatively, you’re still allowed to just join a sports club, or improv group, or take a group tour holiday, or anything, and meet someone that way. Sometimes, meeting someone IRL can feel a bit more … well, real. That’s not to say there’s anything wrong with online dating - but just because it can feel like the only option you’re allowed to take these days doesn’t mean it actually is. |
