A number of homes were evacuated after the device was discovered in Dundela Street on Tuesday morning.

Police said the alert had now ended and a cordon had been removed.

Belfast East MP Gavin Robinson, of the Democratic Unionist Party, said those responsible had "shown reckless disregard for the local community".

Police and ammunition technical officers (ATO) attended the scene following the discovery of a suspicious object.

In a police statement, Det Sgt Natalie Ash added: "A controlled explosion was carried out on the pipe bomb type device which has been now been declared as viable and has been taken away for further examination.

"The road has fully re-opened. Enquiries are continuing and we would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding during this time."

Shortly after the alert began, Ulster Unionist Party councillor Carole Howard advised those caught up in the alert that Dundela football Club was "open to residents as an emergency rest centre".
