Maxim Lutsky looked taller andSLOTXOmore serious. And he wasn't quite as joking as when I first met him a few days after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. At that time, the 19-year-old took a break from university and volunteered to become a warrior.

Last week, he made a difficult journey out of the front line of the fighting area in the Donbas region. He took the secondary road and traveled at night to evade the attack. His task was to bring the necessary supplies back to the combat unit. He told me how to fight with the Russian army.

We met in Bakmut, a small town within the radius of which the Russians could attack with artillery. Many buildings were destroyed and the city was almost uninhabited.

For three weeks Maksim and his comrades fought to protect what he called a "zerber," named after a dog adopted by the warriors. Cerber is located in an old ruined factory in Rubichne. The city that was eventually occupied by the Russian army.

“It's like being in hell. There is no point where we can use it as a defensive line. We have to be in some drainage ditches. Somewhere in a bunker since Soviet times or in the fire station."

Maxim said the unit was attacked about 25 times a day by Russian tanks.

“One of my friends was killed. and about 10 to 15 more people were injured.”
