 The World Meteorological OrganizationSLOTXOwarns Global temperatures could rise to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels by 2026. On May 10, 2022, Reuters reported that The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said in its annual report released on Monday there is a 50 percent chance that global temperatures will rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels by 2026. However, such predictions do not mean that The world will have to rise above the 1.5 degree Celsius ceiling compared to pre-industrial levels. This is the maximum threshold set in the Paris Agreement to avoid severe climate change. The report states that The likelihood of global temperatures rising past the 1.5C ceiling above pre-industrial levels for a short period of time has been around since 2015. As of 2020, scientists estimate the likelihood of a temperature rise to such a high level. Listed at 20% before increasing to 40% in 2021. The report also pointed to the consequences if Global temperatures will rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels for just a year. It will cause damage to many coral reefs in the sea. and the melting of Arctic sea ice The current average global temperature is 1.1 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial average. Max Dilley, WMO's deputy climate director, said in the report. “Loss and damage involved or severe impacts from climate change have already occurred. and some may not be reversible in the near future.” Global leaders have pledged under the 2015 Paris Agreement to help prevent long-term increases in global temperatures to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. But at present, there is still a lack of concrete action on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. which is the cause of global warming Kim Kopp, a climate scientist at the Georgia Institute, warned that “It's important to keep in mind that once we hit 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, If we continue to lack a science-based emissions restriction policy, it means we will suffer even worse impacts as we approach 1.6 and 1.7 degrees Celsius and for every increase in temperature thereafter.” |
