Throughout the early 90's and 2000's technologies integrated into vehicles have rapidly changed. The introduction of new electronic devices and gadgets in vehicles has led many governments around the world to re-look at the MOT checks. A new EU legislation which affects the whole of the UK is already been carried out on an advisory basis from as early as February 2012.

Announced in early November the new MOT tests could potentially be enforced in early 2012. It is likely that other countries in the Euro will be enforcing these new tests in early February. Many driving groups are asking why these new checks are required. A NI Environment Minister, Alex Attwood said, "Modern vehicles incorporate many more electrical safety systems and the European Commission has decided that these systems should now be included in the MOT test." A new EU legislation could see these new 22 check enforced across Europe on 1 May 2012.

So what are these new checks aimed at? The new checks will cover items like power-steering indicators, tyre pressure monitoring systems, electrical sockets for trailers and Electronic Stability Control. These new technological advancements will be electronically tested and measured in order to gauge any damage or modification.

This is quite a change from the news reports of late October, where many MPs and driving groups were calling for MOTs to be changed to once every 2 years. Many driving groups put forward a strong case that automotive quality had risen greatly during the same period when MOTs were enforced. The build quality of many new modern cars are such that often MOTs are passed for several years without even failing.

A recent report by the AA shows that most garages are not prepared for the changes starting in 2012 and this could potentially increase queues for MOT services. The new equipment and training required to test the electrical systems of a modern car could cause many small MOT service stations to be placed outside of the market. These small MOT service stations are unlikely to have the experience or finance required to purchase testing equipment and training required for many of the computer systems in luxury cars such as Mercedes Benz, BMW and Nissan. These technologically advanced cars often require much more service equipment and training. The AA predicts these new checks could potentially increase the divide between independent MOT service centres and the Manufacturers Services stations.
