Nania the elephant gets closer to re-uniting with mother A DNA breakthrough has slotxo given hope to plans for the release of an orphaned elephant into the wild in Burkina Faso. Nania, a critically endangered forest elephant, became separated from her herd when she was only three months old in 2018, and ever since has been hand-reared by wildlife carers. Now the hunt is on for her mother, who experts believe could still be alive, with the aim of reuniting the pair. Céline Sissler-Bienvenu, the francophone Africa director for the International Fund for Animal Welfare in France, told BBC Newsday it had been thought the mother had been poached but no carcass was found. "The last hypothesis we had was that she couldn't cross a very important river near where she was found," Ms Sissler-Bienvenu said. Samples were taken and match has been found to another female relative - possibly the mother. "What is important now is to give Nania confidence to go closer to the elephants... We are teaching her what is needed to survive in the wild," she said. Nania the elephant is expected to be reunited with her mother soon. |
